5 reasons why should visit Bosnia & Herzegovina

We stayed in Bosnia for round about 3 weeks during our trip to South East Asia.

The main purpose was to visit a friend of ours. We had the chance to get a real taste of Bosnia.

Travelling from the far northwest throughout many parts of the country we got to see the differences within.

Bosnia & Herzegovina is such a unique country within Europe that it would be a shame to not see it.

The history, the different people, the different landscapes, all this makes it a must see.

So here is our top 5 reasons why you should put Bosnia & Herzegovina on your bucket list:

1. Prenj Mountain

It doesn’t really matter what you are into, you are going to love this region anyway!

Especially of course if you love hiking and getting rewarded afterwards by stunning views!

The Prenj mountain is part of the Dinarian alps and stretches from Konjic to Mostar in the northern Herzegovina part of the country.

We parked or Van on the side of a road for a 3 days, had an absolutely amazing view from our bed and simply enjoyed the peacefulness!

No traffic, no people, just the two of us in the wild!

2. Jablaničko Jezero

Just a stones throw away from the Prenj mountains, a bit further up north, you will find lake Jablaničko.

It lies pretty much in the center of Bosnia & Herzegovina and is perfect for cooling down during the hot and brutal summers.

Lake Jablaničko is one of the few lakes we found that is actually really clean and indeed invites for swimming and chilling.

You will have the Prenj mountains in the background that make wonderful views.

3. Sarajevo

A city we didn’t actually plan to see but thank God we decided otherwise!
Sarajevo, and especially it’s old town was a place we fell in love with. We both, Sara and I, are no real big city enthusiasts, but this one really is worth a visit.
Stay a day or two! Thankfully this old town wasn’t destroyed completely during the war like many others in this country. There is also a huge amount of history here.

For instance, World War 1 basically started in Sarajevo when the archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.

The Jerusalem of Europe, as it is sometimes called, is one of the only cities in Europe where you will find churches, mosques and synagogues right next to each other.

You can see and smell the influences especially from Turkey, but also many other nations, and it seems to blend in more than just fine.

4. Bilećko Jezero

This was our last destination in Bosnia before heading to Montenegro and it was a lucky punch because we didn’t find the place we were wanting to go initially.

Lake Bilecko is an artificial barrier between those two countries since it is manmade.
There is not a single soul at this lake or its surroundings. Only a few fishermen came by and tried their luck.

So we were basically alone. Almost a bit scary, such a beautiful lake and nobody there.

Later we found out that there used to be a village in the valley which was completely drowned with water some 60 years ago. And the water level is decreasing by the day.

This place is perfect for diving and exploring the lost city underwater!

5. Roadtrip from Jablanica to Mostar

This one is a proper scenic drive. It makes a perfect roadtrip! You drive along the river of Naretva that leads you to the city of Mostar.

Driving this road you can nearly smell the ocean because you just know you are driving the right way ;)

There is also cute little restaurants on the way, right along the river.

The only reason we didn't put Mostar on this list on its own is, because it is so touristy.

It is a gorgeous little town, at least the old town but only early in the morning or during off-season.
