THERMOPILES
At Thermopiles we met an incredibly interesting young couple, Julie & David from Luxembourg.
They started their travels in April this year and have already travelled as far as Turkey & Georgia! Their way of transport is by motorbike and their main targets are organic wine producers. As a wine lover myself I immediately felt a connection there ;) You can visit their blog here: invinomotoritas.wordpress.com - A wine tour aroud the world
Since David is a chef, he prepared us a wonderful meal, curry with lentils! One of Sara’s all-time favourites. Absolutely delicious! He actually used to be a chef for a well known international hotel group in Mongolia. And Julie is an amazing singer, so if you ever need a gospel singer or group contact her! :)
The reason we went to Thermopiles in the first place was that it was marked with a little star on our map. You should absolutely go there if you love hot pools! Beautiful in winter with more than 40 degrees celsius.
At the main gateway UNHCR built a refugee camp, so at first you don’t really know what’s going on. That day the baths were reserved for women so we decided to park our van a few hundred meters down the river and enjoyed three days right by the hot sulfur pools!
DELPHI
We then cruised along the cotton fields of Greece and found ourselves in beautiful but touristy Delphi.
Known for being the navel of the ancient world I had to see what the fuzz is all about. It is a spectacular site and one worth visiting but all visitors coming to Greece should know, that you will have to pay for every piece of rock that has been lying around for too long…meaning every single monument. No matter where, be it the north of Greece or the deep south.
You will pay a fortune if you want to see all of them. So we advice you to pick a few you really have to see before you die and leave the rest. Just enjoy this beautiful country and its nature.
No admission fees for nature…yet ;)
ATHENS
Speaking of ancient monuments, here we are in the capital of Greece. What comes to everyone’s mind when thinking of Athens? It’s gotta be the Akropolis which lies in the heart of the city. We did not pay to get in simply because it was too expensive and we rather spend our money on other things, like good food. It was still beautiful enough from the outside though and we didn’t feel like we missed a great deal. After a while you get a feel for what ancient buildings look like on the inside ;)
So you see, we are definitely no monument fanatics ;)
Athens itself is a gorgeous place and it’s got a huge amount of different areas and suburbs. Here you can see that the craft of sewing has not died out yet. Fabric shops on every single corner. This was the moment when Sara fell in love with the country for good :)
It’s a hectic city with lots of very friendly people. A rare combination. We come from Austria, trust us, we know…
