Wild Camping in Europe

Finding the perfect free spot for your house on wheels is not always as easy and fun as you might believe. But it is definitely doable and worth it in the end!

Camping in the wild simply means, not paying for an official Camping site. We are more or less self-sufficient thanks to our photovoltaic panels and our water tanks.

We can stay in the wild for a coupe of days if we are not using too much water and electricity.

Is it legal? Nope! At least in most European countries it is not.

But come on, what’s legal in Europe anyway?

However there is a few more developed countries that allow free camping, like Albania which we cannot wait to see!

So how has it been going for us?

Before we started our journey, our calculations included 1 Camping site per week.

Now almost 2 months into it we camped at 2 Camping places and stayed there for 3 nights altogether.

We did that either to fill up our water tanks, because there simply was no fountains to be found, or to wash our hair.

We are in the water everyday, either the ocean, a lake or a river. But once in a while a proper shower won't do any harm ;)

All the other days we found a free spot to park our Van! Some days it is bloody hard to find a spot, especially in cities or touristy towns.

And I am not easily satisfied when it comes to finding the perfect spot for the night!

The less touristy a place, the friendlier the people, it’s always the same…

Our very first night in Italy we spent in a swimming pool parking lot on the side of the main road.

Not exactly that wonderful spot everyone imagines when thinking wild camping, but it did the job.

When it comes to finding free parking in cities, Italy is the best! In almost every bigger town you will find at least one huge free parking area.

The best one was in the center of Bergamo! Free parking, walking distance into town and even water supply!!

All thumbs up for Italy! Unfortunately we didn’t take a photo but this is where it was: Parcheggio Viale Giulio Cesare in Bergamo.

Of course it’s always easier to find that ideal spot in the wild. No doubt about that. But there’s 3 of them we have to mention to you guys  in particular.

These have been our most outstanding free camping spots in the wild so far:

1. Ploce Beach, Montenegro
free parking, free access to the beach! You can pay for an umbrella and loungers if you want to. Music is playing all day long though

2. Kotor, Montenegro

Off-season, outside of Kotor overlooking the town, we asked an apartment owner if we could stay there for the night, not a problem at all

3. Bilecko Jezero, Bosnia & Herzegovina
huge and warm lake, no people, awesome spot for diving and exploring the underwater city
